Pinchot Park Nativity School Event!

6/7/2012

Dear Rotary Club,

Tuesday, June 12th will be our day at Gifford Pinchot Park with the Nativity School from 4pm - 7pm. If you can get there early around 3:30 to help set up that is great. If not that is fine. And it is okay if you can only come to part of the event also.

Attached is a map of the Gifford Pinchot State Park. We are meeting in the parking lot of the Conewago Day Use Area. All the activities will take place in this one area of the park.

Directions
From Harrisburg take 83 South to Exit 35 toward PA-177/Lewisberry. Then turn right onto Yorktown Rd in about 0.1 mi. Then take 1st left onto Wyndamere Rd/PA177 and continue on that.  Turn Left onto Alpine Road and follow that around the park to the Conewago Day Use Area entrance to the park. There is a large parking lot there.

Here is a link to the park website:
http://www.dcnr.state.pa.us/stateparks/findapark/giffordpinchot/index.htm.

The website gives an address you can put into the GPS but that will take you to the entrance on the other side of the park. So you can follow the GPS using that address till you are on PA177 and just remember to turn left onto Alpine road to go to the other side of the park.

On the attached Map you will see the entrance to the Conewago Day Use area parking lot. Go in that entrance to the parking lot to the T and make a left, the nature center is in the far left corner of the lot. The nature center icon on the attached map is a man with his arms in a "T" and he is encircled by a couple of rings.

Also attached is the latest version of the sign up sheet. There will be 6 stations for the kids: woodlore/lashing, tree walk, fishing, disc golf, nature class and cooking. 30 kids from the Nativity School are coming and will be split up into 6 groups. So there will be 5 kids at each station at one time. You just need to come and be ready to have fun in the outdoors!!!

Hope everyone has a great week!

Thanks,
Alicia

* Saturday, June 9 - Grant Writing Workshop (deadline to register is June 1)
* Thursday, June 28 - "The Party", District Governor Dennis Zubler's Inaugural Dinner (deadline to register is June 21)

The Five Senses Garden

4/25/2012

In 1996, the Five Senses Garden was created as part of the Capital Area Greenbelt in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania and is open year round to the public. It is located just past the Harrisburg East Mall off of Mall Road. The Garden is structured so visitors can experience the nature through each of their five senses: sight, sound, touch, taste and smell. The garden is maintained by volunteers and it needs help from the local community so that it can continue to thrive and be enjoyed by the public.

The Harrisburg Keystone Rotary Club will be volunteering at the garden on Saturday, May 19, 2012 from 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM. Members of the club will be weeding, mulching, edging planting and doing a variety of other activities to spruce up the garden beds so that the public as whole can enjoy their beauty.  The Harrisburg Keystone Club welcomes other Rotary Clubs and members of the community to come out and participate at this event. This will be a great
opportunity to get outside and some much needed fresh air while at the same
time helping to make our local community a brighter prettier place
alongside friends!!

For more information about the Five Sense Gardens please visit the website: http://caga.org/five_senses_gardens.

Ghana Project Possibility!

3/21/2012

Last night we were visited by a member of the West York Rotary club who invited us to consider participating in their project to raise money for a refrigeration system for a fish processing plant in Ghana!

We have not yet discussed the club's position, but please check out the flyer here so that when we do, you are in the know.  Remember, knowing is half the battle!

Food Bank Success!

2/22/2012

Last night's meeting was a meeting for service!  Not only were many club members in attendance, but some new possible members were there as well, lending a hand.  The working group also included another 25 people (or so) from the community, all there to help bag rice!

In total, 400 boxes of rice were bagged, besting the last record for a night of 150!  Excellent work was done by all, and kudos all who supported the event.

Recap - 2012 Rotary Awareness Guest Night

2/2/2012

Picture
The excitement began to build about a week before, as more Rotarians sent emails with names of expected guests for our 4th Annual Rotary Awareness Guest Night.  With a week to go, we were already expecting over 20 guests!

As the week progressed, names kept pouring in, and the final preparations to present the awesomeness of Rotary and the diversity of embracing “Service Above Self”, all while having fun, networking and being part of a worldwide community  much larger than ourselves, took on an energy all its own.

“Wow, can this be?” I thought as I started printing out nametags; counting over 40 names of expected guests. “I hope we have enough food!”  Remembering previous years of having lots of food left over, I took a deep breath and hoped for the best. Long story short, the energy carried straight through the evening and into the following days, as the feedback received from our guests was overwhelmingly positive.

Rotary is so much more than getting together to sing, eat a meal or hear a speaker. Rolling up our sleeves and seeking out partners to multiply our efforts has been the core for the Harrisburg Keystone Rotary Club, and will continue to be a focal point of what it means to be a Rotarian in this young, vibrant club!

With an eye toward minimizing time “in meetings,” and out-of-pocket costs, the Harrisburg Keystone Rotary Club is an ideal place to hang out, do good work, and build lifelong friendships.

Hearing little snippets of some aspects of what Rotary offers, including Group Study Exchange (GSE); efforts to eradicate polio; and local and international humanitarian service; as well as opportunities to develop leadership skills; and a warm, friendly, and safe environment to develop public speaking skills; all were inspired to give back to those in need.

And as a demonstration of new and excited commitment to serve, two Rotary members, Amber and Craig Mease, were installed and welcomed.

Two of our evening’s guests have already submitted their applications to join the club, and a dozen others are seriously considering making Rotary a regular part of their lives – each with their own reasons why this is important to them!

Thank you to all who participated and contributed!
