The (brief) History of our Club
The Harrisburg Keystone Club was chartered on September 16, 2005. Several members of other Rotary clubs and interested community members gathered in February 2004 at an informational night that led to the provisional formation of our club. That meeting was held at Appalachian Brewing Company over Happy Hour, which was no accident. This new approach to meeting times in District 7390 yielded a collection of new members who weren’t interested in the typical breakfast or lunch clubs in the area.
We meet every week on Tuesdays in the Appalachian Brewing Company's 2nd floor Gallery area, located at 50 N. Cameron Street in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. You'll find us gathering to socialize at 5:30pm, with our meeting officially beginning at 5:45pm, and ending promptly at 6:30pm. You'll miss rush hour, enjoy a great craft brew, meet some interesting and friendly people, and hear an interesting speaker.
From the beginning our emphasis was on timely meetings, hands-on service projects, and a diversity of membership in both demographics and classifications, with the same dedication to Service Above Self and the spirit of Rotary.
Since our founding, we have undertaken many local and international service projects. Hands-on service projects help us to do tangible good in our community while also developing close camaraderie with our members. Fellowship is a key component of any Rotary Club. In our brief history, our membership has included couples, family members, and even produced a marriage of two club members who met at that first informational meeting. Clearly service leads to life-long friendships.
Internationally, our club has been active from the start with several members who are Rotary Foundation Alumni. We have sponsored participants in Group Study Exchange, conducted multiple foundation grant projects in Ecuador and Guatemala, and even led a medical mission to Ecuador.
From the start, our goal was to be full and active participants in Rotary internationally, at the local level, and in our club. Our approach may be different from the norm, but the result continues to be an active, growing, and vibrant addition to Rotary in South Central Pennsylvania. In the ultimate compliment, other “happy hour clubs” have formed in South Central Pennsylvania. We have proven that there are always new ways to involve people in Paul Harris’s vision of a collection of professionals dedicated to the ideal of service.
